RETROSPECTIVE This   idea   begins   to   develop   at   the   end   of   the   1990s,   with   the   purpose   of   spreading   the   Brazilian   art   song.   The   baritone   Renato   Mismetti     and   the   pianist Maximiliano   de   Brito   undertook   several   tours   in   the   most   important   cities   of   Europe,   reaching   as   far   as   New   York,   with   varied   programs   of   Brazilian   art   song.   The intention   matures   and   the   project   begins   to   finally   come   true   in   the   year   2000,   with   the   series   Poetry   &   Music   –   Brazilian   Sonorities  ,   having   as   purpose   the establishment   of   an   independent   cultural   bridge   between   Brazil   and   Germany   and   thus encouraging   the   creation   of   an   international   network   of   artists   and   scholars.   Composers rooted   in   Germany,   both   Germans   and   from   other   nationalities,   put   texts   in   Portuguese   to music   and   Brazilian   composers   compose   on   German   poetry.   Each   project   culminates   with the   first   world   presentation   of   new   works   in   the   most   renowned   European   concert   houses, where    every    year    performers,    composers,    writers    and    translators    meet    dealing    with    a particular   theme   throughout   a   whole   year.   Thus,   significant   elements   of   various   cultural circles   are   approached   in   peculiar   way,   providing   a   creative   and   stimulating   exchange,   and also   establishing   an   important   and   innovative   contribution   to   the   contemporary   musical repertoire.   Furthermore,   an   authentic   image   of   each   culture,   about   the   creative   prism,   can be   conveyed,   with   special   emphasis   on   the   discovery   of   a   culturally   rich   and   varied   Brazil, free    of    clichés    and    prejudices.    Likewise,    contemporary    Brazilian    composers    experience direct   contact   with   German   poetry,   which   in   turn   gets   new   interpretation.   Thus   the   series Poetry & Music   then mediates cultures and forms of artistic expression. Precisely    today,    when    the    theoretical    and    interdisciplinary    debate    about    multicultural relations   and   cultural   policy   is   so   popular,   this   project   effectively   shows   in   its   work   the essence of what often remains only in intention and in theory. Regarding   the   verse   Ein   Wald   von   Leibern,   eine   Welt   von   Seelen   (A   forest   of   bodies,   a   world   of   souls)   of   Hermann   Hesse’s     poem   Paradies-Traum   (Dream   of Paradise)  ,   an   exhibition   of   four   Brazilian   artists   is   held   alongside   the   concerts   of   the   project,   which   address   the   theme   of   the   year   with   several   languages:   the architect   and   graphic   artist   Odiléa   Setti   Toscano  ,   the   artist   Walde-Mar   de   Andrade   e   Silva  ,   the   wood   engraver   Henrique   Lemes     and   the   photographer   Henrique Lisandro  . The exhibition is officially opened by the Mayor of Bremen,   Dr. Henning Scherf  . The   series   has   aroused   great   interest   from   prominent   composers,   poets   and   linguists   of   various   countries.   Among   many   others,   names   like:      Curt   Meyer-Clason  , Telê   Ancona   Lopes  ,   Brian   Cole  ,   Lya   Luft  ,   Michael   Ritter  ,   Vicente   Salles  ,   Volker   Michels  ,   Bárbara   Heliodora  ,   Jean   Malaplate  ,   Luís   Milanesi  ,   Didier   Lamaison     and Alcides Villaça   have made direct contribuitions. The   interaction   of   various   forms   of   artistic   and   cultural   manifestation   happens   when   word   and   music   come   together.   In   the   field   of   the   arts   this   is   not   such   a novelty.   What   is   singular   here   is   the   scope   in   which   the   intercultural   exchanges   happen:   sounds   and   words   led   the   audience   in   the   four   years   of   the   project   through different   spaces,   periods,   stylistic   and   aesthetic   lines,   revealing   nooks   and   crannies   of   a   new   world   still   full   of   mysteries,   marvels   and   conflicts   to   be   unraveled   and demystified.
